Question: What is the etiquette of the autofollow? Plus the rationale. What’s the why?”

Ah, to follow or not to follow - that is the question. And to AUTO follow or not to auto follow - that’s a whole other question!

My policy from day one was to follow everyone back, primarily for two reasons:

1. Following tweeps back on Twitter says “Thanks for caring about what I have to say… I also care about what you have to say.

2. When both parties are following each other, you have the ability to send Direct Messages to each other. A Direct Message (DM) is a private exchange between you and the other person and does not go out in the public Twitter stream.

According to Mari Smith, a leading authority on Social Media, “You never know when your next $100k client wants to DM you. I’ve made a LOT of lucrative deals as a direct result of having my DM feature decidedly ON!”

Sure there are other ways of reaching you but Twitter is SO darn efficient, why create barriers for contact?

Autofollow?

As you build more followers on Twitter, it becomes really difficult to follow back everyone who follows you. Twittrafficpro.com enables you to automatically follow back tweeps. With Twittrafficpro.com you can unfollow everyone who is not following you.

Twittrafficpro.com also has an anti-spam setting - where the system unfollows anyone who unfollows you within x days. Spammer typically follow lots of people then when they are followed them back, they unfollow you so they can go follow more tweeps!

Auto DM?

When people with a product or service get on Twitter, they want to broadcast to the world their links. They spend little time building a relationship. They get a powerful marketing tool and piss all over it.

If you choose to auto-DM new followers, here are 3 things to consider:

Are you authentic?

If you are asking a question, can you keep up with the response?

Are you sending out the type of DM you would appreciate receiving?

What do you think? Do you autofollow everyone? If not, why don’t you? If so, what type of DMs to you send out?  Do you include an auto DM? What results are you achieving?
